What is Laser Hair Removal?
LONG LASTING HAIR REDUCTION
Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment (melanin) in the hair. Melanin is present in both hair and skin and is also responsible for determining the color. Because light is absorbed more readily by darker pigments, the laser is able to achieve localized damage to the hair follicle only. The energy from the laser travels down the hair shaft into the follicle, which will retard or stop future hair growth immediately after the first treatment.
What should I do to prepare for my laser session?
There are three very important things to remember prior to treatment:
1. NO SUN EXPOSURE for at least two weeks before your session, and if you are tan wait until it fades completely for best results. This includes spray tans. The more contrast between the skin and the hair, the better your results will be.
2. NO antibiotics for at least 7 days before your laser session, antibiotics can make you sensitive to light and can cause hyperpigmentation on the treated area.
3. SHAVE the treatment area completely the night before or the morning of your laser session. Shave slowly and use a good razor to avoid irritation. It may feel strange if you are a woman shaving your face for the first time but I promise you it will not grow back thicker and faster that is all just a myth.
3. BEFORE your first session, it is important for you to avoid waxing, bleaching and plucking for 1-2 weeks. This is also the case with the use of tweezers. The laser needs to be able to identify the hair follicle. During this time period, shaving is acceptable.
How many laser hair removal treatments do I need?
The body consists of various types of hair, all of which have different evolutionary functions and cellular construction. Different areas of hair throughout the body often grow at different speeds and lengths. A good example of this would be the difference between pubic hair compared with head hair.
Additionally, hormones can play a role in the development of different types of hair. And we’re not just talking about during puberty. People who are on the contraceptive pill may develop hirsutism which can cause an increase in hair growth. The potential for excess hair growth can also be seen in people who are taking steroids, have endocrine issues, polycystic ovary syndrome, or people on HRT. Age plays a part in unwanted hair too given the association with hormonal changes. Women going through menopause may experience extra hairs on the chin, abdomen, upper lip or even a beard.
The reason it is important to be aware of these issues is that they can interfere with the treatment outcome. If any of these apply to you it’s possible your laser hair removal results will be compromised. You need to be aware of these as they will affect how many laser hair removal treatments you will need.
What is the downtime like for laser hair removal?
Laser requires no downtime at all, some redness and irritation may be present afterwards and that may take a few hours or a few days to dissipate but you can go back to your normal life immediately after.
What are the most popular areas to treat?
Usually on women it is underarms, bikini area and lower legs. On men it is the upper body and neck. But you are free to laser whatever bothers you.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Laser Hair Removal is virtually painless. It is a much more pleasant treatment experience than waxing, tweezing, and electrolysis, which are much more aggressive and damaging to the skin. You may feel a short burst of heat as the condensed light reaches your hair follicles, and some people describe the sensation as a tingling or a slight pinching sensation. Results Laser Clinic laser equipment features Air Cooling Compatible (ACC) which directs high air flow at the treatment area during treatment to counteract and cool the targeted area during treatment.
How long do I wait between laser sessions?
Hair grows in cycles, so we will schedule you at every 4-6 weeks for the first few sessions then start spacing it out from 8-12 weeks, the reason we do this is because you will notice your hair will begin to grow slower and slower as the hair follicles become weaker, and if there is nothing growing, there is nothing to laser.
Will laser hair removal work for me?
Results can vary between individuals as everybody has different pigmentation ratios. We have had success with both light and dark skinned people due to the effectiveness of the laser machine we use in our CosMedik. However, before to begin we always conduct a consultation and a skin test to determine a pronostic.
Does laser hair removal safe?
Laser hair removal is safe as long as clients follow the care instructions and medical recommendations. Every precaution is taken to ensure that you have safe and effective treatments.
Lasers used for laser hair removal are non-ionizing; they do not carry any mutagenic radiation whatsoever. The lasers only have a heating effect.
Understanding Hair Growth Cycles
There are 3 phases of hair growth, the Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen stage. It’s important to understand that hair does not grow in unison. While one hair might be in the first stage of hair growth, the one right next to it might be in the last. Each new hair will start with the Anagen phase and end with the Catagen phase.
1. THE ANAGEN PHASE, known as the growth stage, the anagen stage is where cells in the papilla (The papilla is a cluster of cells that look like a knob at the bottom of hair follicles charged with the development of hair fibers and nourishment of hair) start to divide and produce hair. Because the papilla is attached to the hair in this stage, it is most suitable for laser hair removal. The laser transfers heat energy to the hair follicle, destroying both the hair and its papilla preventing any new growth. The anagen stage is also where the hair is at its darkest pigment allowing for the best transfer of heat energy from the laser to the hair.
2. THE CATAGEN PHASE, the anagen phase ends when the body sends signals to the hair to start the catagen phase. Known as the transitional phase of the hair cycle, the hair follicle begins reducing its size (disintegration), the papilla ceases the production of melanin (responsible for pigment or color of hair), and the papilla detaches from the hair to rest. The hair loses the nourishment from the papilla and further reduces its size to a fraction of what it was. The follicle starts to reduce in size and push upwards expelling the hair from the cavity. Due to its detachment from the papilla and the reduction in melanin, the catagen phase is not ideal for hair removal. Though effective hair removal is still possible in this phase, if a hair is targeted in this phase a new hair may likely grow out.
3. THE TELOGEN PHASE, known as the final stage of hair growth, the telogen phase is where laser hair removal is completely ineffective since there is no hair to treat. The cavity will lay dormant anywhere between 30 and 120 days until the body sends a signal to start producing hair again.
